Thinking of revisiting a classic read or indulging into a new book? The Man Asian Literary Prize on March 15 is the best reason to do so. In anticipation of the Prize, we ask four ladies of Hong Kong – Bonnie Gokson, Denise Lo, Yolanda Choy-Tang and Charmaine Li-Jepson - to tell us about their favourite books of all time.
Words That Matter. It’s a book of life lessons from O: The Oprah Magazine. I met Oprah through my friend Suze Orman, and she gave me this book, which gathers wisdom from spiritual leaders, philosophers and others. I return to it frequently, each time finding new inspiration and guidance.
The Great Gatsby, as the 1920s is my favourite era. The beauty and innovation of the period has never been seen since. The wild parties, the opulent people and the great love sum up the romance of the whole period. I guess I’m a die-hard romantic at heart!
The Bible. It’s a book that many friends and I refer to over and over again for its passages of inspiration, hope, gratitude, love and how to live a purpose-filled life. The stories we share, and the topics we can discuss and debate, are endless.
Immortality by Milan Kundera. It was one of the first books given to me by my husband, Duncan, along with a love letter. The story itself is a profound, philosophical tale to be savoured slowly. I chewed it line by line, and it is one of the most beautiful pieces of writing in my humble opinion.
