Fifty years ago, Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded AMG with their passion for motorsports. During this period, Mercedes-AMG has recorded numerous successes in motor sport and developed unique road-going high-performance cars.
Last weekend, on June 17 and 18, AMG fans and Mercedes VIPS were treated to an exclusive experience with an AMG product specialist from Affalterbach and two very special cars: the legendary touring race car AMG 300 SEL 6.8, known as the Red Pig, and the latest model, Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster.
For fans who missed the event, you'll be excited to hear that the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 will be on display at the Mercedes me Store until June 23.
AMG 300 SEL 6.8, aka the "Red Pig"
In July 1971, racing drivers Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz won a surprising class victory and second place in the overall classification in the 24-hour race at Spa, Belgium with the AMG 300 SEL 6.8. At the time, the car was absolutely unrivalled.
Aufrecht and Melcher also made the fastest German series-production car of the period even more powerful with a 6,835cc V8 engine and 428 bhp output.
Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster
This is a convertible built to be seen in but made to be driven as a supercar. With a 3982 CC V8 engine pushing out 557 bhp and 680 nm of torque, this athletic machine can ascend from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds. Despite being a convertible, it is only 30 kgs heavier than its hard-top sibling.
