For a city, Hong Kong boasts a surprisingly generous selection of boutique wedding venues.

The five venues we have chosen below are selected as we’ve considered all things required for a boutique wedding: an intimate yet functional space, a dash of creativity and five-star catering and help to assist the wedding.

The Lawn at The Upper House

The Upper House - The Lawn

upper house the lawn

The Lawn at the Upper House only recently launched itself as an event space, prior to the launch it was fairly unknown lounge space used by hotel guests. The al fresco lawn, located by the ground floor lifts of the hotel, is an oasis amidst Hong Kong’s concrete jungle: you ascend to the lawn through a set of candlelit stairs to arrive into a garden that is partitioned by shrubs and bushes.

With a maximum capacity of 80 people, The Lawn is aptly furnished in ivory shade and natural colours, a great blank canvas for decorators to work with.

The Upper House also offers tailored packages upon request.

The Verandah in Repulse Bay

Repulse Bay - Verandah

The Verandah in Repulse Bay has a lovely tropical garden setting and a million-dollar bay view that has stood the test of time since 1920. The dark wood and marble-based grand hall and grand staircase exude colonial elegance.

For the wedding reception, we recommend its lawn area outside which can cater for up to 400 people. Lost for ideas as to how to decorate? The setting alone is so beautiful, even if it was only decorated with simple white floral settings, with petals laid along the aisles, the venue screams romantic. Come nighttime, the newly weds can opt to transform the garden into a dance floor under a starry night.

Crown Wine Cellars in Shouson Hill

Crown Wine Cellars

The 70-year-old bunker transformed into a wine cellar by wine merchants Crown Wine Cellars is a place few, if any, would associate with a wedding. The cellar located in Shouson Hill is nestled within lush greenery and has been declared a UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage site since 2007.

Located 20 metres below ground with extra thick walls, then the Central Ordinance Depot, an ammunition and weapons storage depot, the venue will set your wedding party apart from the rest.

It also has a 1,500-square-foot conservatory, which is a great dining area housed in a unique colonial-styled glasshouse. It sports superb interior that allows natural light to seep through amidst a green surrounding. And of course being a cellar, the wine selection available is the icing on the cake.

Garden Suite at The Peninsula

The Peninsula Garden Suite

The Garden suite features a large wooden sun deck with jacuzzi and a view of the breathtaking view of Victoria Harbour. Given the size of the space, the suite can also be used as a function area that houses up to 50 people, making it the perfect space for an intimate wedding cocktail.

Few hotel function areas are designed with connected bedrooms and spacious living areas, but the Garden suite has rightly done so, promising privacy most newly weds in Hong Kong yearn for.

The suite has exclusive lift access from the lobby and direct access to the Sun Terrace.

Vibes by The Mira

Vibea at The Mira

The Mira

Platinum Suite

This contender is one to be reckoned with, especially if you’re looking to host your wedding in Kowloon. The patio space perched on the fifth floor of The Mira boasts an al fresco space presented with lush greens and private seating, encased between the four walls that make the hotel. You can extend decorations as high as you desire and best yet the hotel walls can be used as a large projecting screen (pictured above) - somewhat of a rarity in Hong Kong.

Around the space is The Mira’s fine dining restaurant Yamm, which can cater for the occasion, and lining the other three walls are the specialty suites, with the biggest rooms on the 5th floor. In fact the Grand Mira suite is so big (it’s The Mira’s equivalent of the presidential suite), it can double as a cocktail or reception venue on its own. But if an al fresco experience is what you’re looking for, perhaps even for the bridal suite, we suggest the Platinum suite as it has a bigger terrace.

Other extraordinary venues

While we presented you with five of our top picks, we came across several others we felt was worth a mention, especially if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary.

Tai O Heritage Hotel: The new property at the heart of the fishing village by Sino Properties is definitely one to look out for, especially for those who would like a wedding with a difference. The hotel has nine rooms and features a glasshouse restaurant aptly named Tai O Lookout, which can also be rented to host an event.

Airport World Trade Centre Club: Set in a building sandwiched between the two flight terminals at Chep Lap Kok, this venue is located on the seventh floor of the Airport World Trade Centre. With a 360-degree view of the airport runway, the event space offers a generous patio space to host wedding cocktails and features a scrumptious Chinese restaurant inside where you can not only arrange to cater the wedding but also book out the indoor space to host your wedding reception and dinner.

Poolhouse: The Poolhouse in the Grand Hyatt is also a favourite of ours, set next to the Plateau Spa of the Grand Hyatt, the intimate glass house is a great event space to consider, and is the closest venue we can find that replicates the vibe at a destination wedding.
