More than US$3.5 million was raised for Aids research at the third edition of the annual amfAR gala dinner. The star-studded guest list included actress Charlize Theron, supermodel Naomi Campbell and singer-songwriter Mark Ronson. David Tang presented this year’s guest of honour, Pansy Ho, with the amfAR Award for Courage and described her commitment to the fight against Aids as “nothing short of admirable.”

A high point of the evening came during the live auction courtesy of Jackie Chan, who surprised guests by auctioning off an opportunity to appear in his coming film with Sylvester Stallone and to attend the movie’s premiere in Beijing. Other notable lots included an Andy Warhol print of amfAR founder Elizabeth Taylor and a seven-night stay at Leonardo DiCaprio’s Palm Springs holiday home.

The climax of the night came when British pop star Charli XCX took to the stage to perform her chart-topping hits Boom Clap, Fancy, and I Don’t Care. The after-party continued outside with Mark Ronson at the turntables, and the dancing went well into the wee hours.
