W.W. Chan & Sons Tailor

Mr Chan, who founded the Hong Kong store in 1948, is one of just a handful of Shanghainese tailors in town who cut his teeth in the widely revered “red gang”—a generation of tailors made famous in early twentieth century Shanghai who mixed Chinese, Russian and British tailoring influences.

The result is a strong heritage and exacting standards of craftmanship that are reflected in the construction of top-notch suits. Chan, who handed the business down to his son Peter, swears by traditional processes in the art of creating a bespoke men’s suit.

They offer full floating canvas construction, hand-stitched lapels and as many basted fittings as necessary. Peter continues to resist the temptation of mechanised production, and all cutting and tailoring is still done on site. That’s a step beyond even most Savile Row tailors today.

Suits: HK$16,000 to HK$21,000.
Duration: Six weeks
