To showcase its latest manifestation of the “art of travel”, Louis Vuitton is popping up in the Oval Atrium of IFC Mall to launch the Spring/Summer 2017 menswear collection from February 15 to March 10. This season, punk London meets wild Africa in true savoir-faire style under the direction of Men's Artistic Director Kim Jones.
An homage to Africa, the collection explores themes of heritage, identity and formative influences. Think animal prints and varying textiles, while punk influences, originating from London, make an appearance in parachute straps and crepe soles on laced brogues.
The Louis Vuitton pop-up is dedicated to the limited edition collection with a special commission by Jake and Dinos Chapman. The Chapman Brothers are visual artists who draw on a vast range of cultural associations to create subversive, often disturbing, pieces of art that provoke thought.
On this occasion, they have created five twisted prints of African animals—the lion, elephant, rhinoceros, giraffe and zebra—savagely rendered, snarling and grimacing on a background of the Vuitton Monogram. Meanwhile, the heritage of Louis Vuitton is paid tribute to with a glass trunk exterior inspired by the iconic Louis Vuitton trunk.
The entire pop-up is an immersive experience into the collection—utilitarian details of punk reference Vuitton’s history as a trunk maker, while tartan clashes with Maasai checks and French handiwork. Biker jackets—ever a punk staple—are recreated in ostrich and crocodile, while notions of the safari and the gentleman traveller are present in Savannah-bleach shades.
A bold exploration into the old and new, Louis Vuitton has definitely ignited our thirst for travel.
