Umi

Japanese   |   $ $ $ $   |   Central

For those wishing to have a private and meditative meal, Umi offers a quiet respite with fresh seasonal omakase sushi

Across from the historic Man Mo Temple and nestled in a row of antique shops and art galleries, a nondescript entrance on Hollywood Road transports diners into a Japanese minimalist haven. A long, single block of hinoki wood anchors the 10-seat sushi bar punctuated by George Nakashima-designed chairs and a hanging orchid tree. Against this backdrop of stylish zen, chef Makoto Harada delivers a traditional Edomae-style sushi experience beginning with the signature truffle rice, trailed by a procession of premium fish flown in from Tokyo’s Toyosu market daily.
