Ahead of the #HKTatlerBall2015 this Saturday, we list the do’s and don’ts when attending a formal dinner

It’s often been said that the levels of formality are in a gradual decline, with reference to dress codes, table manners, interference of mobile phones, and a general disregard for your immediate surroundings. We at Hong Kong Tatler abhor such behaviour and with the help of DeBretts, we list the top rules of etiquette when it comes to attending events such as the Hong Kong Tatler Ball happening this Saturday:

Dress Codes:

Dress appropiately, follow the dress code outlined in the invitation and if unsure, ask others for further guidance. Be lauded for your sartorial sensibilities and be the talk of the town – for the right reasons.

Punctuality:

Arrive on time and be punctual when it comes to transitioning from the foyer from cocktails, to dinner, and so forth. Being “fashionably late” is no longer in vogue.

Conversation Etiquette:

Do your best to avoid interrupting conversations, or exiting your table during a speech or performance – both are heavily frowned upon.

Phone Etiquette:

We know, you simply must hashtag all your images and tweets with #HKTatlerBall2015 – so will we – but look for opportune moments to do so and don’t keep your head down all night, ignoring your tablemates and making them feel invisible or less important than your followers.

Speeches:

Be prepared for speeches and toasts. Don’t finish everything in your glass and find yourself with nothing to raise a toast with. If someone is on stage speaking, ensure you are listening and not chatting with other guests as was the sad case at the FIF Gala, and most recently the Hong Kong Ballet Ball, much to our dismay.

Tatler Tip:

It’s often best to take the lead from those around you at each stage of the evening, look particularly to the top table for when to sit down, start your meal, and leave the table.
