The grandson of the late Henry Fok discusses fostering an appreciation for the nautical in China

Eric Fok sits at the helm of Nansha Marina, part of the 22sqkm Nansha Bay development masterminded by his grandfather, the late Henry Fok. The marina is setting the pace for boating in China, which is in its infancy compared to the long history of boating culture in the West. "We want to educate and develop the marina culture in China," says Fok. To this end, the marina staged a conference last year with 21 speakers from 11 countries. "China is very new to this and in need of expertise," says Fok. "We did - and will do - our part to entice experts to the country...to impart thier knowledge to, and share their enthusiasm with, our people, especially the young." Fok is keen to foster an interest in yachting among the younger generation. "We work with local schools to educate the young in what sailing and boating entail, and to plant the idea in their heads that they too could enjoy the sea."
