We head to the Spring/Summer 2013 show and check out its Spanish matador and flamenco references

The Ralph Lauren SS13 collection carried a sense of wanderlust and nostalgia of Old World gentry and glamour. While he made clear allusions to traditional Spanish and French styles, the references were almost too literal. Most ensembles were direct references to cultural symbols like matadors or mariachi players. So direct in fact, that some looks were costume-like.

This was mostly due to the accessories used in addition to the clothes. Hats, fans, shawls, and beaded bags reinforced the collection’s costume look. Even though the collection was filled with flamenco inspired dressed, fluffy layered sleeves, and embellished boleros, the Spanish heavy collection had some redeeming highlights.

Craftsmanship – the cuts, tailoring, and stitching of each piece was impeccable. Each seam knew and followed the female silhouette. Every beaded and embellished piece left the audience stunned. Those encrusted pieces added richness and sense of nostalgia to the collection. Ralph Lauren made modern touches with a particularly memorable laser-cut scarlet coloured dress, which was one of the standout pieces in the show.

Other highlights included softly masculine ensembles – black and white feminine suits alluding to a matador’s strength and presence. There is an undeniable vibrancy and confidence. Despite its distinct theme, the collection showcases an array of looks, from casual, everyday travel wear to stunning evening gowns for the sophisticated jetsetter. Ralph Lauren shows his ability to evolve his work and still showcase quality craftsmanship as a testament to his career and his longevity as an American designer.
