The beloved 19th century colonial building has a new lease of life, with a whole stable of revamped F&B options

The instantly recognisable former Marine Police Headquarters is a Tsim Sha Tsui icon, with its colonial-style architecture and prominent location within the bustling retail district. Previously known as Hullett House, the iconic destination has been renamed as House 1881 to reflect its impressive heritage, and refurbished to restore its former glory as a historic meeting spot between cultures.

House 1881 is comprised of a boutique hotel and five dining concepts, each one with a distinct culinary offering to take visitors on a gastronomic journey no matter what time of day. Each venue is also available to be used for private events. The iconic Fortune Villa is an opulent destination dedicated to the art of Cantonese cuisine, with a menu dedicated to traditional dim sum and a la carte options such as poached chicken with conpoy, and stir-fried lamb cooked with locally-produced preserved tofu.

On the other end of the cuisine spectrum is Stable Steak House, a dramatic site that sees the former horse stables (the original antique wooden stable doors are still retained) transformed into a sophisticated western restaurant where premium meats and delicate seafoods reign supreme. Located just above the steakhouse is the Stable Bar, which prides itself on one of the city’s most comprehensive selections of gin (more than 100 of them currently), artisanal spirits and wine.

Another drinking destination within the House 1881 complex is The Sergeant’s Bar, a laid back gastropub that was originally the watering hole serving the marine police and visiting sailors. Today, the venue continues the tradition of quality brews with its selection of craft beers, themed cocktails, and its signature fish and chips and bar snacks.

In the daytime, Café Parlour remains a popular anchoring point for alfresco wining and dining on the beautiful Victorian-style patio with its curved archways. The all-day venue will continue the tradition of afternoon tea and homemade cakes and pastries, as well as serving comforting classics such as lobster bisque and curries.

In addition, starting from this June visitors can pay a visit to The Gourmet Gift Shop by House 1881, a purveyor of thoughtfully curated items for the food lover in your life. With quality, provenance and heritage underscoring the selection of products, you’ll be able to shop for artisanal local ingredients, seasonal food items, luxury condiments and a wide range of beverages. Homemade cakes and pastries are also sold here, and can be enjoyed in-house at the cosy adjoining balcony. Keep an eye on the events calendar here, too, as the venue will play host to various tasting events and masterclasses.
