Hong Kong diners shared their favourite dining experiences and gourmet hot spots

Having launched a brand new collection of dining events this season, from the Jean-Georges Vongerichten meet-and-greet dinner at Mercato to Antonio Lai’s cocktail masterclass at VEA, Asia Miles’ dining activities include a new voting campaign for Hong Kong members. For two weeks since end of October 2017, the city’s food lovers voted for their favourite gourmet hot spots spanning across five categories. On November 15, 2017, the voters have spoken Asia Miles proudly announced this year’s winners in its “Hong Kong’s Favourite Restaurant – Member’s Choice” Awards.

Nearly Two million Hong Kong voters took part in the campaign, and Asia Miles divided this year’s shortlist of restaurants and bars into five categories: Choosy Foodies, Cool Vibes, Photogenic Feasts, Night Owls, and Hidden Gems, with ten nominees in each. Covering everything from local eateries to exceptional fine-dining establishments, members voted for their favorites while sharing their most memorable dining experiences. Five members with the most heart-warming stories will win an exclusive cooking class with local television chef Lee Ka-ding, chef patron of the newly opened Ding’s Kitchen.

Asia Miles’ Members Pick voting began with its most notable ‘Choosy Foodies’ category, where its members select their favourite unique dining experience. The three winners were Sushi Man, Grand Hyatt Steakhouse, and The Langham’s T’ang Court. Awarded for the first time, Yuen Long’s Sushi Man was chosen for its notable omakase menu covering unique and highly seasonal items that won the hearts of many.

Yum Cha offers contemporary takes on traditional dim sum and modern interpretations of Chinese regional classics

Cool Vibes winners include the city’s best fine-dining establishments, such as the Ritz-Carlton’s Tosca, The Pottinger’s Gradini, and The Peninsula’s Gaddi’s, which had the edge over the other strong contenders for the Members’ Choice award. Headed by Hong Kong Tatler’s 2017 Best New Chef award winner Xavier Boyer, Gaddi’s has long been an institution for fine-dining in Hong Kong, with generations of exceptional takes on French cuisine using seasonal European ingredients and creative presentation.

Gradini specialises in modern interpretation of Italian classic dishes

Asia Miles also awards eateries with a strong presence on social media, as the Photogenic Feasts category featured some of the city’s most Instagrammable dishes, and this year’s winners include Lee Tung Avenue’s art-filled Brazilian-Japanese eatery Djapa, and two dim sum restaurants: Social Place and Yum Cha, both famous for innovative presentation, contemporary takes on traditional dim sum and modern interpretations of Chinese regional classics.

The Hidden Gems category highlighted unique dining experiences, including establishments that are often overlooked. This year’s award winners covered Hong Kong’s love for casual dining, as Classified, Prince Edward’s The Alchemist, and Taiwanese eatery 1963 木十豆寸 edged out a list of notable cafes and independent restaurants. Having operated the longest among the winners with more branches spreading across town, Classified offers fine quality in casual dining setting and increasing range of healthy options for guests.

Lilya's Morrocan-inspired decor adds an exotic touch to Central's vibrant night life.

Night Owls, the fifth and last category of this year’s “Hong Kong’s Favourite Restaurant – Member’s Choice” Awards, honors nightlife establishments that bear the fine balance of great dining experiences with unique mixology options. Moroccan bar and restaurant Lilya, American restaurant Lily & Bloom, and The Pawn won top honours this year. Coming a long way since its early days as the once-famous Woo Cheong pawn shop, a historical monument in itself, The Pawn is headed by world-famous celebrity chef Tom Aikens, with a strong mixology arm headed by resident mixologist Tunny Alexander. The Pawn offers a unique take on contemporary British cuisine and is a favorite for cocktail lovers of the city.
