The group behind Louise, Mono, and Ando has opened a 3,000 square foot café inside Central’s art hub

Lifestyle cafes made a prominent mark on the local food and beverage scene in 2020, with an ever-increasing number of new cafes cropping up in all neighbourhoods from Central and Sheung Wan to Sham Shui Po. Jia Group, the local restaurant group behind dining concepts such as 22 Ships, Mono, and most recently, Bibi & Baba, has joined the fray with the opening of Between Coffee, a new lifestyle café in Tai Kwun.

Residing in the heritage complex’s JC Contemporary building, where Jia Group’s Jiangnan restaurant Old Bailey used to be, Between Coffee has completely transformed the space. The newly-opened café takes over the 3,000 square foot venue where the restaurant once stood. The interior invites an abundance of natural light, and evenly-spaced tables are neatly arranged along the lengthy stretch the main dining area; an expansive terrace overlooks other structures within Tai Kwun and surrounding Soho neighbourhood.

Coffee lovers can enjoy brews prepared with the café’s house blend coffee No. 10 which made using beans from Ethiopia and Honduras that are custom-roasted by Craft Coffee Roaster. The quality of coffee offerings, from varieties on the pour over menu to milk-based coffees are monitored by resident coffee roaster Lok Chan and head barista Zac Wu. Other alternative beverages are also highly recommended at Between Coffee, from turmeric or matcha latte to iced sesame mountain, where iced coconut milk is topped with a homemade black sesame puree.

Between Coffee offers a diverse selection of food items, particularly sandos, or Japanese-style sandwiches. The tamago sando, filled with egg salad, chives, and soft-boiled Japanese eggs is an ethereal treat thanks to a custom-made fluffy Japanese milk bread. The chicken sando with cabbage and wakame mayonnaise and Japanese uni tagliatelle are among some of the notable food items available at Between Coffee, as well as set lunch options available from Tuesdays to Sundays.

Between Coffee rounds up its food offerings with a handful of sweets. The Ichigo puff features a petite choux pastry filled with vanilla pastry cream and Japanese strawberries, while a Japanese fruit sando showcases seasonal Japanese fruits, cream cheese, and Chantilly cream sandwiched between milk bread layers. Jia Group applies the same dedication in building their restaurant into polishing Between Coffee, with the same meticulous details that go into refining the Japanese café concept often seen in outlets such as Omotesando Koffee and Sham Shui Po’s Sapsan 89. The café brings an inviting vibe and is set to be another crowd-pleaser in the neighbourhood.
