The local craft brewery has launched its special tipple for the hotel’s Captain’s Bar

It’s something of a running joke over at Tatler Towers that sometimes, it’s nice to have some beer after all that champagne. Even better if it’s proper beer, locally brewed and served in chilled silver tankards in one of the more comfortable bars in town. Throw in a tiffin curry lunch while you’re at it, won’t you, Mandarin Oriental?

For serious elbow benders and fans of the new craft brew movement, the dining_news that the hotel's Captain’s Bar has teamed up with local entrepreneurs Young Master Ales is nothing short of good dining_news. The collaboration has been a year in the making, but guests can finally enjoy a tankard of fresh draught Captain’s Bar Brew, the recipe for which has been worked on and tweaked by the Young Master team and approved by the Mandarin’s executive chef Uwe Opocensky.

We were invited to sample the new beer, which at 4.7% ABV is nevertheless deceivingly light and fresh, with more floral notes and sweetness than the usual YMA blends we’ve sampled around town. It’s the ideal pint for the summer, and one we’ll be ordering several more rounds of. At HK$98 it’s not a budget pint, but then this isn’t your everyday watering hole.

Captain’s Bar, Mandarin Oriental, 5 Connaught Road, Central

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the beer was 6-7% ABV
