Cookie Vission’s founder Winnie Pang loves neighbourhood bakeries and browsing the markets for inspiration
As part of our series celebrating the vibrancy and community within Hong Kong’s dining scene, we spoke to several of the industry’s leading lights about why they love the city’s unique food culture. Here, dessert queen Winnie Pang – founder of Cookie Vission, original owner of Oddies Foodies and creator of the latter’s famed eggette parfaits—tells us about her favourite spot for freshly baked egg tarts and what food item makes her feel instantly nostalgic.
Tell us about your favourite Hong Kong food memories.
My favourite Hong Kong food memories will always be my dad taking me to street-side barbecue places in Kowloon and getting skewers when I was a kid. Chicken wings were my favourite! Even though I don’t really eat them as much now, I still feel so nostalgic whenever I walk around the city and catch a whiff of barbeque in the air.
What are some of your favourite local ingredients to use?
I always look forward to just browsing the outdoor markets here and picking up fresh vegetables. While it’s not really related to anything I make at Cookie Vission (yet!), I really like local ginger. It’s so fragrant and juicy, and goes well with so many dishes.
One dish I love making with local ginger is steamed milk pudding (姜汁炖鲜奶). I find that ginger goes really well with milk—actually, with dairy in general; it adds a distinct contrast and the flavours complement each other really well.
