This easy-to-make iced coffee treat is satisfying every coffee lover’s needs during self-isolation

Social distancing has forced people to find ways of entertaining themselves at home. For some, it’s trying out every recipe in Alison Roman’s latest “Nothing Fancy” cookbook, and for others, it’s falling down a social media rabbit hole and finding the most soothing and satisfying food content to watch and replicate.

That is where the latest Dalgona Coffee trend comes in. The iced coffee went viral on Instagram, Tik Tok and other platforms because of its easy 3-ingredient recipe and its appealing creamy texture.

Dalgona coffee is inspired by the South Korean dalgona candy, a toffee sponge that resembles the creamy dollop that tops the ice coffee. All you need is two tablespoons each of instant coffee, sugar and hot water. Mix them well together then beat the mixture with a whisk until thick and creamy. Add ice, then milk to a (preferably) clear glass and top with the coffee mixture.

With over 14,000 posts under the #dalgonacoffee hashtag, the Dalgona coffee trend is giving the world’s coffee-obsessed community another way to have coffee at home and Hong Kong content creator @samishome was more than happy to try it.

Our Tatler Dining editors even tried their hand at it. The whole recipe takes about five minutes and leaves you with a delicious treat to finish off a meal. It is quite sweet due to the two tablespoons of sugar but you can adjust the amount as you please. The toffee-like mixture that comes out is dense and watching it form a layer on top of the milk is very gratifying.

Tatler Tip: Because it makes such a small quantity, you can whisk the mixture by hand first then finish it in a foamer to form that perfect thickness.
