Founded by Giorgio DeLuca and Joel Dean, the original Dean & Deluca opened for business in 1977 in SoHo, then an edgy artist and warehouse district in lower Manhattan. Designed to evoke a turn of the century food department, the store carried a staggering variety of produce and foodstuffs, including many goods never previously sold in the US, such as radicchio, balsamic vinegar, and sun-dried tomatoes.

In those early days, I went out of my way to establish extra virgin olive oil . . . everyone who came into the store got a taste, ” DeLuca has said.

Since then, the founders have grown the brand to become a multi-channel retailer of gourmet foods, wines, and kitchenware.

They’ve also expanded around the globe with multiple stores in the US, as well as Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the UAE, Kuwait, the Philippines, and Singapore. The Macau venue will be the brand’s first in China.

This first venture showcases a 26-seat café with an elevated, contemporary look. Apart from distinctive subway tile and Carrera marble, a subtle nod to the city’s Portuguese heritage will also be included in the design.
