Christie’s will present fine and rare bottles from billionaire and avid wine collector Joseph Lau’s esteemed collection in a live auction in Hong Kong on 13 April

The auction catalogue for Christie’s upcoming Finest and Rarest Wines sale reads like a Who’s Who of Bordeaux and Burgundy wine producers, thanks for the most part to property tycoon and avid wine collector Joseph Lau. A selection of some of the most iconic wines from his cellar will be presented, with highlights including large format DRC Romanée-Conti from 1989 to 2005, magnums of Vosne-Romanée Cros-Parantoux by Henri Jayer from 1986 to 1999, and exceptional Bordeaux First Growth vintages produced between 1982 and 2003.

The former chairman of property developer Chinese Estates recently placed sixth on Forbes’ annual list of Hong Kong’s richest for 2022, and is well known for his love of the finer things in life—whether that’s coloured diamonds, art or antiques. He is the owner of various artworks, including pieces by the likes of Warhol, Gaugin and Hockney worth at least US$1 billion and has purchased some of the world’s most expensive diamonds ever sold. Wine has also been an avenue in which he has chosen to invest. And he’s had quite the nose for it—the upcoming Christie’s sale is set to offer a total of 89 lots with an estimated value exceeding HK$24 million. Previous sales by Sotheby’s of parts of his collection in October 2020 and April 2021 both saw sales estimates double and 100 percent of the lots sold.

Lau’s penchant for wine has centred on the great names of Bordeaux and Burgundy—Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafleur, Pétrus, and Cheval Blanc all feature––and his exceptional collection has been built over a period of three decades. Early in his collecting career, he took advantage of being able to purchase large quantities of the rarest wines, though he also always displayed an aptitude for identifying the best and ensured they were kept in fine condition.

“I am delighted for the opportunity to present my collection, carefully assembled over many years, to wine enthusiasts across the world through this collaboration with Christie’s,” says Lau. “Every selected bottle is a testament to my thought, attention, and devotion to collecting only the most impeccable and rarest wines.”

“Every treasured bottle in Mr. Lau’s prestigious collection represents the holy grail for sophisticated wine collectors, who marvel at the owner’s dedication and focus on the most iconic vintages from esteemed producers,” adds Michelle Chan, Head of Wine, Christie’s Asia Pacific.

The sale also features 500 lots from various owners, with further examples from Bordeaux and Burgundy complemented by bottles hailing from Champagne, Italy, Spain and the US. Highlights include multiple vintages of Rousseau Chambertin, d'Auvenay Bonnes-Mares, Leflaive Montrachet, Salon, Sassacaia, Pingus, Alvaro Palacios, L'Ermita and Screaming Eagle.
