Christie’s will present fine and rare bottles from billionaire and avid wine collector Joseph Lau’s esteemed collection in a live auction in Hong Kong on 13 April
The auction catalogue for Christie’s upcoming Finest and Rarest Wines sale reads like a Who’s Who of Bordeaux and Burgundy wine producers, thanks for the most part to property tycoon and avid wine collector Joseph Lau. A selection of some of the most iconic wines from his cellar will be presented, with highlights including large format DRC Romanée-Conti from 1989 to 2005, magnums of Vosne-Romanée Cros-Parantoux by Henri Jayer from 1986 to 1999, and exceptional Bordeaux First Growth vintages produced between 1982 and 2003.
The former chairman of property developer Chinese Estates recently placed sixth on Forbes’ annual list of Hong Kong’s richest for 2022, and is well known for his love of the finer things in life—whether that’s coloured diamonds, art or antiques. He is the owner of various artworks, including pieces by the likes of Warhol, Gaugin and Hockney worth at least US$1 billion and has purchased some of the world’s most expensive diamonds ever sold. Wine has also been an avenue in which he has chosen to invest. And he’s had quite the nose for it—the upcoming Christie’s sale is set to offer a total of 89 lots with an estimated value exceeding HK$24 million. Previous sales by Sotheby’s of parts of his collection in October 2020 and April 2021 both saw sales estimates double and 100 percent of the lots sold.
