These non-alcoholic alternatives to wines, spirits, beers and cocktails are sure to be popular among the sober-curious crowd

There’s a spectre on the alcohol industry as many around the world are putting alcohol back on the shelf. Instead, they’re going for easier zero-proof drinks that taste just as good, if not better, than alcohol to rest and unwind.

For some, avoiding alcohol is a matter of health; for others, they no longer like how alcohol makes them feel; and there are those who simply do not like the taste of alcohol. As the demand for alcohol drops—especially among Gen Z—non-alcoholic drinks have exploded in popularity, with many filling in a market that previously had neither the traction nor popularity among those whose idea of a good night is a good bottle of wine or whisky.

But not all non-alcoholic drinks are made the same. “Just as my vegetarian friends do not find ‘alternative’ meats an attractive proposal, many of my non-drinker friends are not enticed by the non-alcoholic category, simply because they don't need or encounter it in their usual lives,” drinks writer June Lee told Tatler in February. “They are looking for products that are clearly healthy, clean and recognisable.” With that in mind, we decided to round up some of the best zero-proof drinks out in the market. They may be alternatives, or they may be something else entirely, but what matters is that when the bottles are flowing, it’s always a good time.

1. Copenhagen Sparkling Tea

Copenhagen Sparkling Tea was born from sommelier Jacob Kocemba’s struggle to find an appropriate wine pairing for a dessert. The answer lay instead in a tea extract, which became so popular that he has turned sparkling tea into a thriving business. Up to 13 organic premium teas are blended and hand-brewed in small batches, before they are bottled with white wine, grape juice, or other flavour boosters—all natural, of course. This individualised process creates sparkling teas such as the Blå, brewed with Darjeeling First Flush tea with hints of jasmine and citrus, as well as Lyserød, a zero-proof alternative to rosé brewed with Silver Needle white tea.

If you still prefer alcoholic tipples that are easier on the liver, there are also low-ABV sparkling teas such as Grøn, whose notes of citrus, lemongrass and green apples have green assam Hathikuli tea to thank. Today, Copenhagen Sparkling Tea is hailed as one of the best alternatives to champagne, best paired with oysters and fish, but try not to see it as an alternative—it shines in its own category.

2. Non

Easily one of the most recognisable alternatives to wine is Non. Having dined at many Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe and Asia, founder Aaron Trotman found that the non-alcoholic pairings were often much more creative than the wine pairings, compelling him to create zero-proof products that would go further in flavour that traditional wines would.

Each bottle of Non is created from fresh and seasonal ingredients, which are then treated—be it curing, roasting or stewing—and mixed with verjus, or the juice of unripened grapes. The result is just as complex as wine can be, with the possibility of wilder flavours. Take the Non No. 3, a pale yellow drink that’s spiced with cinnamon and yuzu; or look at the Non No. 7, a deep rust red that fills the senses with stewed cherry and coffee.

Drop Bear Beer Co aims to be the biggest non-alcoholic beer company in the United Kingdom, and with its multiple gold and silver medals at the European Beer Challenge 2023, it should become a reality. Founded by couple Joelle and Sarah Drummond, these beers are brewed with traditional techniques and ingredients, along with some tweaks that bring the total ABV down to 0.5 per cent. Try the yuzu pale ale, which delivers a fresh citrus flavour, or the tropical IPA that’s just right to cool down in the summer, or our tropical climate.

4. New London Light

How can high-alcohol spirits possibly become non-alcoholic? Just ask New London Light, a company that works with Salcombe Distillery Co in Devon, England to distil its zero-proof spirits. The company takes advantage of Salcombe’s location as a seaside town by handpicking local botanicals when the high tide recedes, which are then steeped in a grain spirit to extract all its flavours. The alcohol is then removed, leaving behind a flavour distillate that is blended with other distillates, kombucha and flavours to make non-alcoholic spirits. A highlight is its “First Light” gin, which is made with Macedonian juniper, habanero capsicum and ginger alongside 15 other botanicals for a pleasant nose and palate. The “Aegean sky”, on the other hand, blends kumquat and blood orange with olive, bergamot and other botanicals for a drink reminiscent of sunsets on the Mediterranean.

It’s most popular for its bourbon, which posseses notes of honey, nuts and vanilla, as well as its London gin that’s coloured in a pretty pink hue. Liqueurs are also on offer here, with products such as dry vermouth, orange sec, and amaretti to make the perfect zero-proof cocktail. Don’t feel like mixing?
