Ho Lee Fook
The classic noisy Chinese restaurant has its charms, hitting the spot with good food and comfortable seating
Ho Lee Fook is best when you’re craving the addictive qualities of Asian takeaway and a loud Chinatown-basement vibe—except here dishes are creatively executed, ingredients are carefully sourced and a touch of restraint allows for appreciation of an unconventional approach. The concept is intentionally ironic in Hong Kong a city where diners demand authenticity in their Chinese cuisine; but who would say chef Jowett Yu’s cooking isn’t authentically his own? The menu is an ode to Chinese diaspora overseas. Homey dishes are served family-style, mostly plated in a nonchalant mound and heavily seasoned with spices, coriander and fried shallots capturing the essence of the chef’s Taiwanese background. The friendly wait staff is able to make appropriate suggestions for preferences and quantity (about four dishes for two people). The drinks pair well as a refreshing counterpart to the well-seasoned menu but stick with something simple like beer or wine. Although there’s a list of inventive cocktails, they can be a bit on the sweet side. The whisky selection is appropriately dedicated to Taiwan’s Kavalan whisky. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations so be sure to arrive early or be ready to wait.
