In a time where mindfulness and clean eating have gone completely mainstream, it is worth remembering that, for many, this way of living is not simply a fad. On October 26, food lovers with a penchant for slow living and food that nourishes the soul will be able to meet the venerable Jeong Kwan, who will be at Asia Society on October 24 for a cooking demonstration and to share her culinary philosophy as part of the Festive Korea 2017 programme.
The Korean nun, who rose to popularity after being featured on a particularly poetic episode of Netflix’s Chef’s Table, is known for her gentle yet humorous character and purist approach to temple cuisine. She has welcomed countless individuals to witness and partake in her way of living in Chunjinam hermitage south of Seoul, including Sook’s Mina Park; Park has recounted her time living and working with Jeong Kwan seunim for Hong Kong Tatler before, and so it seems especially apt that she will be moderating the talk on the 24th.
The dialogue between the two will focus on Korean temple cuisine philosophy and the relationship between food and zen, and is followed by a demonstration and tasting session.
