The new French dining guide has released its list of the top 1000 restaurants in the world, and 25 from Hong Kong and Macau have joined the ranks

The quest for the definitive dining guide goes on, as France has just unveiled a challenge to the World’s 50 Best list with its own ranking system. La Liste’s inaugural ranking was released last night at a ceremony at the Quay d’Orsay in Paris by Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, which honoured Switzerland’s Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville as the number one restaurant in the world.

There has been much talk over the various methods employed by dining guides around the world (I touched upon the topic when the last World 50 Best list was released, and again when we unveiled our own Top 20 list and 2016 Best Restaurants Guide), and La Liste’s approach is to use cold, hard data. An algorithim, named Ciacco (after one of the damned figures – a gluttonous one – in Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri), feeds on review data taken from trusted food guides and websites – including Hong Kong Tatler Best Restaurants – and generates an overall score for each restaurant.

So which restaurants made the top 1000? There are 22 from Hong Kong and three from Macau – flick through the list below to see who they are, their ranking, and what we made of each restaurant by clicking on the link below the images.
