New Punjab Club Launches A New Monthly Breakfast
Black Sheep Restaurants’ New Punjab Club is turning three, and they’re celebrating it in a big way. The two-time Tatler Dining Top 20 Best Restaurants honouree will launch their first ever breakfast session from December, with chef Palash Mitra preparing hearty dishes that will be served on the first Sunday of every month.
The restaurant is best known for celebrating the traditional flavours of the Punjab region, which fuses culinary influences between Eastern Pakistan and Northern India, and the breakfast menu is inspired by the popular morning meals shared by farmers of the region—including hearty stews, Indian omelettes, braised lentils with flatbreads and pickles. Mitra’s menu features a number of starters, an obligatory egg dish, a few vegetable side dishes and a choice of two main courses and dessert to finish.
The meal begins with Punjabi staples such as Mirchi Pakora, where green Anaheim chillies are dipped into chickpea flour batter and deep-fried until golden; corn flatbread is served with stewed mustard greens and flavoured with sugarcane jaggery for a caramel touch; and Mitra’s masala omelette is made with Japanese Taiyouran eggs flavoured with tomatoes and turmeric, served in the pan it is cooked in.
Main dishes include New Punjab Club’s salt-baked cobia served with smoked tomato and samphire chutney and roti. The breakfast karis are thicker and heartier, and the other morning offerings such as three yellow chicken with tomatoes and sour cream are less saucy but still fantastic mopped up with wheaty roti bread. The breakfast set menu is complete with Pista Phirni, a Punjabi version of milky rice pudding prepared with ground rice, pistachios and buffalo milk.
The New Punjab Club breakfast set menu is priced at HK$798 per person, and includes one glass of orange juice and hot masala chai. Reservations for the December 6 edition of the Punjab breakfast can be made by emailing email@example.com.
