This new initiative promises to take the stress out of hosting guests by bringing on the experts in wine

Given the continued restrictions on dining out in Hong Kong, one pandemic trend that is around to stay is entertaining at home—and an aspect of hosting guests that we don't see going away anytime soon is deciding what to drink. To this end, wine subscription start-up Toasst is looking to take that dilemma off your plate with its new Somm Box series, where Hong Kong's top sommeliers are invited to curate a selection of wines to be delivered straight to your door, along with food pairing recommendations.

First up is Aaharn sommelier Kiki Sontiyart, whose skilled wine pairings for that most challenging of cuisines, Thai food, makes her Somm Box a versatile choice for Southeast Asian dishes. Her choice of six wines covers both Old and New World, as well as house favourites and recent discoveries, and includes the likes of Sigalas from the Greek island of Santorini, Ochota Barrels from south Australia, and New Zealand's Felton Road.

Explains Sontiyart of her curation: “Ochota Barrels red wines tend to be aromatic with soft tannin, complex yet easy drinking. Sigalas put the Assyrtiko grape on the world map with its precise wine making; the floral freshness of the wine combined with salinity from the ocean of Santorini makes it a great pairing with Thai salads and appetizers with a lot of lime juice and acidity. Felton Road, a benchmark producer for Pinot Noir, also makes an elegant Chardonnay. Betz from Washington State and Chandon de Briailles from Pernand-Vergelesses in Burgundy are my recent discoveries that I am quite excited about. And the Betz ‘Beausoleil’ is a homage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape red that also celebrates the glory of New World fruits.”

The Somm Box by Aaharn is available for HK$3,500 from April 6 until June 30, and comes inclusive of a dine-in voucher and an invitation to a food and wine pairing event happening at Aaharn in May, as well as future virtual and physical events for Toasst members only.
