Our dining guide turns 32 in 2016, and on November 19 we will be celebrating with a launch party and awards ceremony to toast to this year’s high achievers in the dining industry

There’s not long to go until the new edition of the Hong Kong Tatler Best Restaurants guide is launched on November 19, 2015. Like previous years, the annual dining guide presents a detailed list of our best picks of outstanding restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau, and the launch of the publication leads up to our Best Restaurant Guide award ceremony, where the top 20 restaurants will be honoured, as well as the Best of Year awards. Here are the things you need to know before the big day.

THE EVENT

Since its inception three years ago, the Best Restaurants Guide awards night has become a firm fixture on the dining scene, with Hong Kong and Macau’s best chefs, restaurateurs and industry professionals coming together to celebrate the achievements gained in the year gone by. It is, therefore, recommended that this is the one night of the year you won’t want to be dining out at your favourite fine dining restaurant as it’s highly likely the masters will be partying with us. This year, the event will be held at The Ocean in Repulse Bay and is kindly sponsored by Perrier-Jouët, San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, Li TV and the venue itself.

For the second year in a row, the ever-popular award for Best New Restaurantwill be ultimately decided by our readers. The shortlist can be found here and the results will be announced on November 19. 20 lucky voters who impressed us the most with their reasons for why their favourite should win the award will be given one of the first copies of the guide, fresh off the presses.

This year, we also have two new awards: Best Tea Service, as a hat-tip to our local tea drinking culture, and Restaurateur of the Year, an acknowledgment of the achievements of an individual or group in building superior dining experiences in Hong Kong.

TOP 20 BEST RESTAURANTS

2- top 20 2015.jpg -

For the fourth year running, we’ve chewed over our list of the best restaurants in the 2016 edition of the Hong Kong Tatler Best Restaurants guide.

The guide features over 250 restaurants, bars and cafes, and our editorial panel will mull over which stood out above all the rest, honoring them in our annual Top 20 list. Some restaurants that have stayed in the top 20 for three years in a row have included Amber, Pierre, Caprice, and Robuchon au Dome. Will they stay in this illustrous list for the fourth year running?

At the 2013 and 2014 awards event, we have produced a unique short film celebrating the restaurants that have made it into our top 20 list. The concept is always conceived in house by our editorial team, and everything is shot and edited by our talented videographer and his crew. Click through to see the videos.

2013: SPOT THE GOLD MEDAL

In the first year, it was a whimsical production that featured our gold BRG medal as a recurring motif.

For this debut video, we put out a unique trophy for all of our award winners featuring our Best Restaurants fork, knife and chopsticks logo rendered into a heavy gold medal set into a crystal base. In the video, the medal makes subtle appearances in every restaurant that made it onto the Top 20 list; part of the fun is guessing where it might appear next and in what form. With just one sample to use throughout filming, our BRG medal has gone through all of Hong Kong and Macau’s best restaurants – it has been heated in a blisteringly hot Josper grill at St Betty, dunked into freezing ice in Gaddi’s, used as a chopping board for steak tartar at Café Gray Deluxe and fashioned as a wheel for a trolley of petits fours in Tate.

2014: THE TATLER TASTING

We had already pulled it off once – the inaugural 30th anniversary cocktail event celebrating the 2014 guide kicked off with a special 5-minute video where we filmed all of our Top 20 Best Restaurants in various scenarios with our special gold Best Restaurants Guide (BRG) medal making a cameo in each scene. This year, we got to thinking – why not create a lengthy tasting menu featuring all of our favourite dishes from each of these 20 restaurants, and create a visual degustation through the region’s best kitchens and dining rooms?

This year, our video is something that is completely different – stay tuned to find out what we’ve produced for 2015.
