A brand new microbrewery peddling fresh local artisan beer is now operating in Ap Lei Chau

The past year has been a remarkable one for brew heads – particularly those with a penchant for interesting craft beers. With more and more imports (particularly from the American and Japanese genre) readily available in bars and restaurants, and the success of events such as Beertopia (which will take place over three days in 2014) and suppliers such as Hop Leaf and Americraft,  we reckon 2014 will be the year of craft beer. And a ready indicator seems to be the terrifically timed opening of Young Master Ales in Ap Lei Chau.

Located in an industrial building in the southern district, Young Master Ales (YMA) was founded by Rohit Dugar, a beer enthusiast and former executive director of Goldman Sachs. YMA’s manifesto outlines the desire to revive craft brewing in Hong Kong by creating the best local beer with the highest quality ingredients; there are no stabilisers, preservatives or additives used in the production of the beers. The team believe in a “grain to glass” philosophy, which is refreshing in our city.

We love the aesthetics of the brand as well, which draws its inspiration from Hong Kong’s humble industrial past – Chinese calligraphy informs the logo, red wet market lamps hang inside the factory, and black-and-white images of old Hong Kong pepper the site.

Currently, YMA has between three and five styles of beer available, which change occasionally, but may include the likes of a Young Master Classic ale (using a blend of North American and Austalian hops), a soba ale (infused with premium matcha), and a punchy session IPA. Currently, you can find YMA beers on tap at The Roundhouse – check their Facebook page for more updates on where to get your fix.
