Retired Malaysian squash queen Datuk Nicol David shares how she developed the mindset of a champion and the important lessons she takes with her

Only a handful of people can claim that they have held the title of world champion. Former Malaysian professional squash player Datuk Nicol David achieved that extraordinary feat not once but eight times.

She held the world No 1 position for a record-breaking 108 consecutive months from 2006 to 2015. She also won the World Squash Championships (formerly known as the World Open) eight times and the British Open title five times.

Her achievements have garnered admiration around the globe, establishing her as one of the greatest squash players in history.

Following her retirement from the sport in 2019, David has dedicated her time and energy to the Nicol David Organisation. Through the organisation’s Little Legends programme, she fosters positive values, such as confidence and respect, in young children through sports and education.

On being not afraid to start over

“I was fortunate to have a female coach, Liz Irving, who supported me throughout my journey. She served not only as a coach but also as a mentor and friend. She advised me to start afresh from the beginning as I had to change my entire game and mindset to suit the demands of a professional squash player. She wanted me to strive to become the best in the world,” she said.

“I had to relearn the basics: how to hold a racket, hit the ball and move on the court. It felt strange to start from scratch. In those initial four years, I had to accept defeat in matches I had never lost. The first year was particularly tough. My ranking was dropping, but I stayed focused. I was following the path she had shown me, heading in the right direction because she had been there before.”

On recovering from setbacks

“Sports has had a significant impact on my life. I never took it for granted even though it came naturally to me. However, I also encountered numerous challenges and failures,” she said. “I hated losing. I felt devastated whenever I lost a match. Nevertheless, I also learned how to recover and motivate myself to improve. I made it my mission to identify areas for growth and put effort into refining them.

“I learned how to deal with disappointment and understand that it was not the end of the world.”

On manifesting her ambitions

“I have been working with a sports psychologist since the beginning of my career and he has taught me techniques such as visualisation, goal setting and overcoming negativity,” said David. “I have learned to recognise and address any doubts and fears that enter my mind, quickly turning them around.

“Ultimately, it all comes down to visualising myself winning an entire set, playing a flawless match, holding the trophy in my hands and feeling each shot bringing me closer to my goal. There is no time for thinking during a squash match. I rely on my instincts and trust in the training and preparation I do beforehand.”

On squash’s Olympic debut

“It’s a dream to see squash finally included in the Olympic Games. I believe this will be a game-changer for the sport and the dedicated athletes who have worked hard for this moment. We have a talented generation of squash players emerging and I eagerly anticipate their success on the grandest stage,” she said.

“As for myself, I am content with my decision to retire. I have accomplished everything I set out to achieve in my professional career and now, I want to focus on giving back to the community and the sport that has given me so much.

“I hope to inspire and nurture the next generation of squash champions through our foundation. That would genuinely fulfil my ultimate vision.”
