Cover Hannah Reyes-Morales is a photojournalist based in the Philippines whose works have exposed the adversities of the impoverished people in Southeast Asia

Besting more than 60,000 entries from 127 countries, photojournalist and Gen.T honouree Hannah Reyes-Morales' photo was celebrated under the Stories category of the competition

The World Press Photo Contest, which first launched in 1955, has announced its 2023 winners. The competition, which calls attention to some of the most pressing issues facing the world presented 24 regional winners from all across the world.

This year, it drew more than 60,000 entries by nearly 4,000 entrants from 127 countries. For the Southeast Asia and Oceania category, two Filipinas were recognised, including 2019 Gen.T honouree Hannah Reyes-Morales, who bagged the award for her photo titled Home for the Golden Gays.

The photo was originally published in The New York Times this past January with a story that Reyes-Morales also wrote about an elder LGBTQI+ community in Manila, who have lived together for decades and have become each other's support system. 

Reyes-Morales' past triumphs as a photographer include her commission as a Nobel Peace Prize photographer in 2021. She has also worked with international publications such as National Geographic, The Atlantic, Le Monde and The Washington Post.
