Timothy Yu’s childhood dream was to become a chef, but he’s made it big in other fields, namely technology and education. His start-up, Snapask, is a mobile learning app that he describes as “Uber for tutoring.” The app allows students to snap shots of their tricky questions or problems and be connected with a top university tutor within five seconds for a one-on-one session—any time, anywhere. Currently, Snapask links more than 650,000 students with 150,000 qualified tutors in eight countries. This year, Timothy will be launching in five more countries, including the UK and Australia, with the aim of doubling the number of student users. His company already employs almost 70 people from eight countries, most of whom are aged 24 or under.
