Just three years after it was established, Sensetime was named the most valuable AI start-up in the world. The tipping point came in early 2018, after the company raised US$600 million in its series C round of funding. These are exciting times for the Hong Kong-founded company, which specialises in facial recognition technology. Co-founder and CEO Xu Li has 10 years of experience in the fields of computer vision and deep learning, which has paid off handsomely in Mainland China, where the company’s technology has been embraced by more than 400 clients, including Meitu, Weibo and Xiaomi. From surveillance to combating identity fraud, Sensetime’s AI algorithms are only going to become more powerful as it gathers more data.
