With Barbiecore having a fashion moment, this trend is translating to the home as well. Find out what it is and how to elevate it with curated designer pieces.

Long an icon of fashion and mod decorating, the Barbie Dreamhouse look is now coming to real life homes. Bolstered by the upcoming movie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken respectively, Barbie is having a fashion moment.

Her signature hot pink shade is everywhere at Valentino, and she’s selling NFTs with Balmain. Now Barbiecore (as the trend has been dubbed) is bringing her flavour of hyper-pink escapism to home trends which are seeing a return to maximalism.

So what exactly is Barbiecore? As the name suggests, it's inspired by Mattel's most famous doll whose signature colour is a bright shade of pink or, more specifically, Pantone / PMS 219.

Initially, pink was chosen because it was thought to attract young girls to the brand in 1959; since then, pink has transcended its girly connotations and become an empowering shade for women happy to embrace and enjoy their femininity.

Barbiecore is all about pink, pink and pinker, but it also includes adjacent shades like magenta, fuchsia and more subtle pastel pinks.

While the most apparent manifestation of Barbiecore is the colour, at the heart of the trend is the idea of having fun, with such playful motifs as hearts, daisies, and squiggles par for the course.

Although Barbie's aesthetic is distinctively mid-century (the original Dreamhouse was a mid-century model with slim-line furniture made of cardboard), her latest Dreamhouse is very modern and has an indoor/outdoor living focus, with a pink pool slide and a rooftop deck.

While pink at first may not seem like a serious "design" colour like steel grey and black, Jimmy Choo's recently launched chic Choo Café might say otherwise. Currently on a three-month residency in London’s Harrods, the cafe is outfitted in fuchsia with pops of gold, Art Deco nods and plush pink carpeting.

Ready to think pink? These five designer pieces will add a touch of Barbiecore to your home.
