This Pok Fu Lam digs was revamped by Hong Kong-based Hero Design Group, which took inspiration from the beautiful sea views and also created a show-stopping open kitchen

Perched on the pristine coastline of Hong Kong’s Pok Fu Lam, this apartment, which was revamped by the interior design studio Hero Design Group, echoes the tranquil beauty of its surroundings—panoramic ocean views that expand southward towards the horizon.

The clients, a young couple from Hong Kong, purchased the 2,311 sq ft apartment to accommodate their growing family of four and entertain their family and friends.

With that in mind, a crucial part of the brief was to maintain the original unit’s open layout and incorporate two kitchens—one for cooking, and one for entertaining—to provide adequate space to host up to 30 guests. Other than that, the clients requested a well-planned, tidy and functional home equipped with sufficient storage space.

“Our goal was to create a home that the clients could grow with, and where they could host their entire family,” says Ann Chan, the CEO of Hero Design Group. “This meant mixing classic with cosy, and warm with functional—resulting in a true reflection of their personalities.”

After a two-and-a-half-month design process and a four-month renovation, the redesign was completed in early 2023.

The original layout, which featured four bedrooms and three bathrooms, remained largely the same, with the exception of one bedroom that was turned into a study.

Throughout the space, clean lines, thoughtfully chosen materials and intricate details combine aesthetics and functionality. Calming, neutral colours, like beige and brown, and minimally designed rattan and wood furnitures dominate the space.

The serenity of the ocean views, says Chan, was her main source of inspiration for the interiors. “We combined and carefully juxtaposed gentle hues and comfortable materials, striking a balance between structure and a relaxed atmosphere.”

One of the biggest feats of the projects was turning the existing dining space into a striking open kitchen. Featuring custom dark oak cabinetry and a Calacatta viola marble island and matching countertops, it offers a sophisticated look and feel. A wooden chopping board is seamlessly built into the marble kitchen island—a thoughtful, custom-made feature, designed for the client’s love for baking. The clients wanted it to be the heart of the home, explains Chan: “It’s the first thing you see when you walk into the space, so it was important for the island to stand out.”

This bold use of marble—one of Hero Design Group’s signatures—is found in the green-themed powder room, where jade marble and green glazed terracotta tiling add depth and drama to the olive green block painted space.

In the adjoined living and dining spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows that lead onto a 143 sq ft balcony frame the breath-taking vista, allowing natural light to flood the space and creating calm and serene ambiance.

While Chan loves every corner of the space, she says it’s the visual red thread that connects the kitchen to the living and dining, and further onto the balcony and its panoramic ocean views, that really takes centre stage.

In contrast with the living areas that were created with socialising in mind, the private quarters of the home were designed with more restraint. The master bedroom was intentionally kept simple to evoke a sense of calmness and respite, while the children’s bedrooms were designed with flexibility in mind, allowing the space to evolve and adapt as the children grow.

“This home is truly one of our favourite projects we have worked on to date,” says Chan, reflecting on the project. Working with the residents of the home—who have a “deep appreciation for and understanding of design” proved particularly memorable. “Their open-mindedness allowed for creative exploration, and their trust in our expertise fostered a seamless process for us to meet their vision.”
