Red Panda Design’s Stardust penthouse was named for its almost panoramic city view

Nestled in the heart of downtown Kuala Lumpur, this holiday home, spanning an impressive 7,600 square feet, was brought to life by Red Panda Design who took inspiration from the penthouse's breathtaking panoramic city views

The journey of designing the Stardust penthouse began with a fortunate referral from an existing client. As soon as the interior designer set eyes on the penthouse's location, it was an instant attraction.

With a blank canvas before them, the design team had the unique opportunity to shape each space from the ground up, witnessing the construction process unfold brick by brick.

The name Stardust was chosen to evoke the enchanting cityscape that lay before the penthouse. However, the design concept focused primarily on practicality for the end users, ensuring a space that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional for the family.

When it came to selecting materials and finishes, careful consideration was given to the hot climate of Kuala Lumpur. Marble floors were chosen to provide a cooling effect, countering the heat that streamed through the vast surrounding curtain walls during the day. Additionally, timber floors were incorporated to create a warm and inviting ambience.

A noteworthy aspect of the project was the incorporation of green initiatives. Seeking to anchor the space amidst the marble floors, the design team decided to introduce a wooden look in the ceiling throughout the main common areas. To maintain sustainability and environmental friendliness, they opted for an aluminium ceiling instead of plywood or veneer ply, aligning with their commitment to eco-conscious design.

Now that the project is complete, the designer's favourite feature is the theatre-in-the-sky located in the formal living room. This captivating space provides an immersive cinematic experience while offering breathtaking views of the city skyline.

As with any endeavour, there were challenges and interesting situations during the design and renovation process. The design team had to navigate the construction hoist when the lifts were not yet operational, an experience that sent shivers down their spines.

Additionally, the double-volume spaces posed considerable challenges, particularly in the planning of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

One of the standout details of the Stardust penthouse is The Wind Chime.

These full double-volume height rotatable screens were meticulously designed and hand-carried by a dedicated team of workers up the stairwells, as their length made it impossible to fit them into the lift cars. This bespoke feature adds a touch of elegance and functionality to the overall design.

Furniture, decorative objects, lighting, and artwork were sourced from various places. Notable mentions include Nostaloft, King Living, Ovas, and a collection of paintings curated from the client's personal art collection, including pieces from Art We Me.

When it comes to the clients' satisfaction with the completed space, they are delighted with the outcome. Their comments and feedback have been overwhelmingly positive, with an appreciation for the attention to detail and the seamless blend of practicality and beauty that defines the Stardust penthouse.
