The meta work of art that reflects the desert landscape is the most expensive home for sale in Joshua Tree’s 90-acre nature reserve
Listed at USD$18 million since last year, the Invisible House that borders on a mile of Joshua Tree National Park is a 5,500 sq ft property designed by film producers Chris and Roberta Hanley (American Psycho, The Virgin Suicides, Spring Breakers), who also worked on other artistic, eco-friendly properties like the Honeymoon House in Lamu, Kenya, and the Starburst House, also situated within the Joshua Tree locale.
The 2020 build was in collaboration with Polish American architect Tomas Osinski, who’s worked with other renowned architects like Frank Gehry on the Delft porcelain fountain at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, DC.

Inspired architecturally by Mies van der Rohe’s New York City skyscrapers and the striking monolith in Stanley Kubrick’s cult film 2001: A Space Odyssey, Invisible House is–as the name suggests–an invisible house with a Solarcool glass exterior that reflects the natural beauty of the surrounding desert landscape; a live, moving art that changes constantly depending on the time of day, season and passage of time.
Besides that, surrounding the 2,000 sq ft house foundation are preserved Joshua trees and Yucca trees of the pastoral setting, ensuring the protection of wildlife. The linear expanse of the site also aids in supporting aerial pathways for native birds, facilitating their natural, familiarised air current flows.
