Sotheby’s to Auction Karl Lagerfeld’s Personal Furniture in December 2021

Sotheby’s is auctioning off the personal furniture collection of late fashion designer Karl Lagerfel d. The auction, which will be held over two weeks in December 2021, will feature contents from Lagerfeld’s eight residences in Monaco and Paris. The executor for the designer’s estate had missioned the auction house to value and sell items from Lagerfeld's residences two years after his passing.

“The auction will pay tribute to this unique and exceptionally creative designer, a major figure in the worlds of fashion and art,” says Pierre Mothes, vice president of Sotheby’s France.

Paris-based design duo Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet of interior architecture firm Humbert & Poyet were brought in to design the scenography of the auction in Paris and Monaco. The designers chose to create a labyrinth-inspired setting, which introduces the mesmerising interplay of shadows and light.

Black and white contrasts throughout the space hark back to Lagerfeld's signature aesthetic. Transparent materials and reflective surfaces such as the mirrored ceilings create a stunning stage for Lagerfeld's items, whilst referencing the duo's signature theatrical style.

The late fashion legend is known to be a design aficionado and a huge collector of valuable furnishings and art. He was also a fan of multiple design movements, including the Memphis group founded by Italian architect Ettore Sottsass.

Auction highlights include artworks by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and American artist Jeff Koons, a polished aluminium zenith chair by Australian industrial designer Marc Newson that’s predicted to sell for SG$60,000–$90,000, a selection of furniture by French artists Louis Süe and André Mare, as well as stunning silver cutlery set by Jean Burkhalter.

Other auction items include an assortment of silver cat dishes belonging to Choupette, Lagerfeld's beloved Birman cat, as well as a sculpture of the cat by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. The designer's three Rolls Royces, an assortment of Goyard luggage, his signature fingerless gloves, as well as suits from Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Comme des Garçons will be on sale as well.

Lagerfeld was one of the fashion industry's most celebrated designers, helmed Chanel since 1983 among other brands including his own label. He was also known as an avid collector of art and furniture from different time periods and styles as well as possessing a fondness for interior design. He sold off his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artworks at Christie's in 200 for US$28.5 million.
