5 Hong Kong Art Exhibitions To See In July

On the heels of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover, a number of summer art shows are a reflection on Hong Kong's evolution, the SAR's image of itself and an exploration of life in the city pre- and post-1997. 1. In Search of Miss Ruthless

Curated by Hera Chan and David Xu Borgonjon, In Search of Miss Ruthless explores how the beauty pageant mirrors Hong Kong’s image of itself, as well as the city’s representation on the world stage.

Previously unexhibited works by 23 artists will explore the story of the fictional Miss Ruthless, a public persona from the future, and interpret pageantry as it relates to a society’s values and its beauty ideals.

2. Composing Stories With Fragments Of Time

Karin Weber Gallery’s summer show revolves around a letter written twenty years ago, written by an anonymous Hong Kong immigrant to Australia in anticipation of Hong Kong’s return to China on July 1, 1997.

The letter was presented to eight Hong Kong artists in an invitation for their responses, and the exhibition amalgamates their diverse personal tatler_stories that reflect different generations, backgrounds and creative fields.

One Second Ago

The group exhibition explores notions of time and temporality, probing into the “teetering sense of balance” that is broken and created at each new second in time.

Bringing together five international artists—Handiwirman Saputra from Indonesia, Jeremy Everett from the USA, Phillip Lai from Malaysia/UK, and Tao Hui and He Yida from China—it seeks to remind the audience to appreciate every moment in our everyday lives, because no single second will ever be repeated.

3. Sui Jianguo

Sui Jianguo’s solo exhibition at Pace Gallery presents a number of paper and sculpture works in the Chinese artist’s first return to Hong Kong in nine years. A pioneer and leading figure in Chinese contemporary conceptual sculpture, Sui has been exploring the artistic process and concepts of form, space-time and Chinese modernity through his craft for nearly forty years.

The exhibition will feature multiple paper works created in 2017, as well as Earthly Force, one of his best-known early sculpture works from 1994

4. Desiring—Post 97 HK Ink Art

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Desiring—Post 97 HK Ink Art explores the evolution of ink art in pre- and post-handover Hong Kong.

The exhibition showcases ink works from 10 local artists across generations and genres, highlighting the role of Hong Kong artists in the development of contemporary ink art on the international art scene.
