On June 14, Asia Art Archive and Spring Workshop will host a performance looking at music and its influence in resistance movements

Asia Art Archive, an independent non-profit organization co-founded in 2000 by our May cover girl Claire Hsu, has been taking major steps towards documenting and sharing recent hitatler_stories of art in the region through their Mapping Asia project. On June 14, AAA will be hosting Singing Resistance: A Musical Performance with Sumangala Damodaran in conjunction with Spring Workshop, a non-profit arts space that hosts international cross-disciplinary exhibitions, films, performances, and talks.

The two-hour-long performance, the fourth programme in the Mapping Asia public programmes series, will exhibit the talents of Sumangala Damodaran, an economist and musician, Pritam Ghosal, a composer, improviser, and soloist, Mark Aranha, a Delhi-based guitarist and composer, Neelambari Bhattacharya, a vocalist and daughter to Damodaran, Simon Hui, a member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, and Billy from the local grassroots folk band Mininoise.

Songs from India’s anti-colonial and immediate post-colonial resistance movement will be performed in six Indian languages, and will cover significant historical events such as the Second World War and the Bengal Famine. The performance will also tie into Hong Kong’s rich history by incorporating Hong Kong protest songs to expose music as an expression of resistance.
