Asia Tatler Readers’ Choice Awards: Favourite Museum

It was no surprise that the most popular museum is also the world's most-visited museum
Favourite Museum: Musée du Louvre
As the world’s most-visited museum, it would have been something of a surprise if the Louvre had not featured prominently in this category, and you duly named it overwhelmingly as your Favourite Museum. The crowning glory of Paris’ embarrassment of cultural riches, the Louvre attracted almost 9.5 million visitors last year, drawn by such masterworks as the Venus de Milo, Winged Victory and, of course, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Even the building itself is a bona fide masterpiece, comprising the 16th-century Louvre Palace counterpointed by IM Pei’s striking steel and glass pyramid (left), added in 1989. More than 220 years after its establishment in Paris, the Louvre has signed a multimillion-dollar deal to lend its name to a new museum set to open in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2015. Part of a US$27 billion cultural district on the emirate’s Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is designed by French Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, and will sit alongside a new Guggenheim by Frank Gehry and cultural projects by Zaha Hadid and Foster + Partners.
2nd Home to the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone, The British Museum is the second most-visited museum in the world, and home to an incredible 8 million objects of historical value collected over the past 250 years.
3rd New York’s most famed museums duked it out for third place, with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) just pipping the Metropolitan Museum.
Hong Kong’s Pick: The British Museum
One of only two Tatler territories not to pick the Louvre as its top choice in this category, Hong Kong readers picked the British Museum as their number one, with the Louvre close behind in second place, followed by MoMA in third.
