Christie’s auction house has just announced that it will be offering Banksy’s Game Changer painting in a charitable auction later this month. Headlining Christie’s 20th Century Art Evening Sale on March, 23, 2021, the original work is expected to fetch up to US$5M with all proceeds benefitting the NHS.

The work was originally gifted to the Southampton General Hospital during the first wave of the global as a gesture of thanks and appreciation to the frontline workers, and, according to Christie’s, a charitable auction was always the artist’s intention for the piece. A reproduction will take the original’s place for future patients and staff to continue to enjoy.

Game Changer is a universal tribute to all those fighting worldwide on the frontline of this crisis,” Katharine Arnold, Co-Head, Post-War and Contemporary Art, Europe, said in a press release. “At a time when we can dare to hope once more, and look at life beyond the pandemic, it is important to reflect on the many symbols of strength and hope we have seen internationally since the beginning of 2020.”

The one-of-a-kind painting features a young protagonist playing with his superhero action figure—in this case, a nurse, rather than a comic book character—in a way that is meant to capture another side of the pandemic that places the focus on family, friends, loved ones, and the simple pleasures in daily life while honoring frontline workers.

When originally unveiled, the work was also accompanied by a simple note from the artist that read: thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white. And while the original painting may not hang in the hospital any longer, according to Arnold, it served its purpose—and will continue to bring about positive change once it goes under the hammer.

“Banksy’s Game Changer was a beacon of light for the staff and patients at Southampton General Hospital and it was the artist’s wish to then auction it with proceeds benefitting the NHS,” Arnold explained. “The work pays tribute to the strength and resilience of those who have demonstrated true leadership throughout the pandemic, the staff of our vital NHS, the nation’s true heroes.”
