Cuba is, without a doubt, the travel destination du jour. With restored relations to the U.S. and a star turn in Chanel’s Resort show, the streets of Havana are flooded with tourists hoping to experience the capital’s unique charm.

Despite the surge of popularity, Cuba is still relatively untouched by international hotel developers. Local hotels are a mixed bag: they tend to be older properties under little regulation for service quality. A better alternative? Booking the numerous Airbnb listings that have sprung up since the company received approval for bringing its rental services to the country.

These gorgeous apartments are tucked in colourful colonial houses and often come with terraces or gardens. The picture perfect definition of a holiday sanctuary, they’re usually managed by local families, which means you’ll get to experience the hospitality Cubans are known for. Click through for some of our highlights in the area and start planning your trip down South.

The awe-inspiring exterior of this 1920’s mansion may resemble a haunted house, but the interiors are incredibly well kept, complete with elegant furniture that mirrors the decade.
