The auction house reports over HK$1 billion from Hong Kong auction of Chinese classical and modern paintings

Sales results of over HK$1 billion at Christie’s Chinese painting sales this spring prove record-breaking, becoming the second highest total for the category. A resurgence of interest in Chinese classical paintings, as well as enthusiasm for modern paintings, was clearly on display at the spring auction.

Many private buyers and clients appreciated the exceptional private collections up for auction. The overall sale exceeded expectations by up to 94 per cent by lot and 98 per cent by value. Renowned masters, such as Zhang Daqian and Zhou Chen fetched top dollar.

Zhang Daqian’s Lotus sold for over HK$80.5 million and Zhou Chen’s River Scenery sold for over HK$51 million, which set a world auction record for the artist. Both paintings were large in scale and created bidding wars in the room that surpassed estimates by tens of millions of dollars.
