Looking for love? Facebook is currently testing a new video-based dating app, Sparked which eliminates the headache of setting up profiles, swiping and messaging—instead, you’ll be connected to another user for a speedy video date. 

Developed by Facebook’s NPE Team, which stands for “new product experimentation”, the app is free to use and operates browser-only at the moment. For the first stage of Sparked, users are matched with other users for a four-minute video date. If the date goes well, the pair can opt to schedule for a ten-minute second date, followed by an exchange of contacts through Instagram, iMessage or email if both parties are keen. 

A quick Google search will tell you just how controversial most dating apps are nowadays. Known for fueling toxic dating culture, as well as contributing to a heightened sense of loneliness and anxiety, Sparked strives to turn a new leaf to the online dating scene by putting an emphasis on “kind dating”. 

While the app is currently at maximum user capacity, you can sign up to be put on the waiting list. To sign up, users have to provide personal information, answer dating preferences and read through the app’s dating guidelines where users are asked to be kind, keep the app a safe space, and be engaging during the date. Love-seekers are even asked to respond to the question “What makes you a kind dater?” for Facebook to carefully select potential users. 

Sparked is the social media giant’s second shot at making a dating product. The first product, Facebook Dating, was developed in 2018 and is available in 14 countries around the world, excluding Hong Kong.
