5 Hong Kong Art Exhibitions To See In July

Don't miss these summer shows, which feature everything from Chinese calligraphy to LA-inspired paintings

1. Wang Yuping: Tedious Paradise

Wang Yuping is most famous for his oil paintings that shine a light on gritty urban life in China, but for this series he’s turned his attention to the colourful streets of Thailand. Highlights of the show include his unmistakably Thai-inspired paintings “Tuk Tuk” and “Yawning Lady Boy”.

2. Remembering Tomorrow: Artworks and Archives

White Cube is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month with a series of exhibitions at its galleries around the world. In its Hong Kong space, White Cube is showcasing rarely seen objects, ephemera and photographs from throughout the gallery’s history alongside works by artists including Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George, He Xiangyu and more.

3. The Voice of the Brush: An Exhibit of Calligraphic Art, Part I

This exhibition showcases the works of four artists—Gu Gan, Huang Yao, Luo Qi and Wang Dongling—whose work is a modern interpretation of traditional Chinese calligraphy. Look out in particular for works by Wang Dongling, whose experimental ink works have won international acclaim.

4. Alex Israel: New Waves

Artist Alex Israel might be Los Angeles' biggest fan. All of his work is inspired by the City of Angels (where he grew up) and often references surfing, Hollywood and celebrity culture. In this exhibition at Gagosian—his first in Hong Kong—he presents a series of glossy paintings of waves that evoke the glamour of his hometown.

5. Happily Ever After II

Blindspot Gallery is shining a light on the art of talented young Hongkongers with this eclectic show, which features work by seven recent art school graduates: Natalie Lo Lai-lai, Cheng Yin-ngan, Cathy Chau Lok-yan, Edwin Chuk Yin-man, Jessie Tam Cheuk-lam, Louis Wong Chun-kit and Rose Yau Lok-yi. If you're interested in works by Hong Kong artists, this is the show to see this summer.
