“Inspiration is really important for an artist. For me, I wanted to be exposed to the visual stimulation that Hong Kong could provide.” These were the words of Alexandre Farto, better known as street artist Vhils, as he quietly observed the hubbub unfolding around him at the Hong Kong Tatler-hosted cocktail event last night at Bibo. Held in honor of the Portugese artist’s upcoming exhibition, Debris, the event was a relaxed affair bringing together a number of art aficionados over Ruinart champagne and canapes.

The exhibition will open on March 21 at Pier 4 in Central, thanks to the efforts of the artist and the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation (HOCA) – and you may have already seen the Vhils tram trundling around the city, another facet of this multimedia project.

“I love the contrast of the city, the culture, the active scene,” says Farto. “My work comes from an urban setting, and Hong Kong is as extreme as you can get, in that sense.”
