Eating healthy doesn't have to mean crunching your way through carrot sticks and kale salad. Find out how a meal planning service can help you eat better in the New Year, and the factors to consider when choosing one:

1. Variety

You know what they say—variety is the spice of life, so don't make your life tasteless. Make sure the meal planning company that offers a variety of dishes and rotates them on a regular basis, so that you're not eating the same dish more than twice a week. On top of that, look for a company that caters to different diets and preferences.

Eatology impressed us with their wide range of diet options, whether you're gluten-free, vegetarian, low-calorie, vegan, ketogenic and/or pescetarian. And if you're extra picky, just shoot them an email and they'll happily customise a menu for you.

2. Nutrition

A good meal planning company should know exactly what's in their meals when it comes to ingredients, macros and calorie counts. While some companies keep this information to themselves, Eatology shares this with their customers via a personalised print-out each day that comes with the meals.

Breaking each meal down, you'll know exactly how much fat, protein and carbs you're having, along with the daily calorie count. This is especially important for those with specific health goals, whether you're trying to slim down or bulk up. All-in-all, we were never hungry with all the food that came with a 1,500 calorie per day meal plan (breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks).

3. Taste

Variety is great, but if your meals aren't tasty, you won't be likely to stick to it. With Eatology, we were impressed with how great everything tasted and it was evident that a lot of thought was put into each dish (although some dishes could use a bit of work on the presentation side).

Some of our favourite dishes included pecan pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast, sweet potato and black bean burgers for lunch, and coconut crusted wild cod with creamy spinach for dinner.

4. Punctuality

The word 'hangry' exists for a reason. With Eatology, that was never the case as the meal deliveries were always on time, sometimes even early. Be sure to check that the meal planning company you're choosing also adheres to a strict delivery schedule. The last thing you want is to feel deprived, or worse yet, wait for a meal that never arrives.

With each meal labelled breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, there's also never any confusion on when you should be eating what—an issue we encountered with some other meal plans.

5. Packaging

If you're environmentally conscious, you might not want to use meal delivery companies due to the fact that they use so much packaging (oftentimes single-use plastic). WIth Eatology, most of their meals come in a Vegware box that's made of recycled sugarcane, making it an eco-friendly and healthy choice for all.

A two-week meal plan with Eatology on the Lighter Delights plan starts at HK$288 per day. For more information, visit eatologyasia.com
