6 Art Insiders On Surviving Hong Kong Art Week
March 21, 2018 | BY Hong Kong Tatler
Let's face it, art week can be more than a little overwhelming. If you still can't decide where to go and what to do, perhaps our art scene friends in the know can point you in the right direction—and give you some much-needed tips on how to survive the the dizzying array of exhibitions, parties, and other much anticipated events
Chloe Ho, Artist
When I get to Art Basel… I’ll go to galleries that feature amazing works by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Willem de Kooning, Fernando Botero, Jackson Pollock, Louise Bourgeois, Kazuo Shiraga and my mentor Wei Ligang. I’m definitely visiting Galerie Gmurzynska, Victoria Miro and Ink Studio–they are all wonderfully curated.
Outside of the fair… I will visit my representing gallery 3812 to see the works of master Hsiao Chin. 3812 has a roster of remarkable contemporary artists working in ink and mixed media. I will drop by Sundaram Tagore Gallery, which is always cutting edge, and visit Liang Yi Museum’s exhibition The Blue Road. It’s of particular interest to me because it explores the colour blue in art, and blue is a signature colour in my work.
A talk I can’t miss… The annual cultural debate from Intelligence Squared.
Diana D’Arenberg, Art Writer; Founder, post-ism
When I get to Art Basel… I will pop by Galerie Krinzinger to say hello and see what they’ve brought to the fair this year. They have a number of artists I love including Kader Attia, Jonathan Meese and Meret Oppenheim. Also, I’m always very excited to check out the Encounters sector at Art Basel, the large installations curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor.
To survive art week… Bring water. And a sense of humour.
William Lim, Collector; Managing Director, CL3
When I get to Art Basel… I will visit Gallery Exit, which is presenting a group show of Hong Kong artists, including some of my favourite young artists such as Cheng Ting-ting.
Outside of the fair… I’m looking forward to the grand opening of Hauser & Wirth at H Queen’s, and their inaugural show of Mark Bradford.
Cosmin Costinas, Executive Director/Curator, Para Site
When I get to Art Basel... Naturally, I’ll go to Para Site. Firstly because it’s well-located at the entrance to the fair, so it’s an easy stop for everyone before they delve into the halls of the Convention Centre. But also because I’m very excited for this year’s exhibition, curated by Qu Chang and showing Law Yuk-mui, which continues Para Site’s tradition of featuring a young Hong Kong artist in our booth at Art Basel.
A talk I can’t miss… Is the talk by Nilima Sheikh taking place at Asia Art Archive on Thursday morning [March 29]. I’m very much looking forward to it. Make sure to attend and take advantage of a rare opportunity to meet this incredible artist.
I also want to see… The series of concerts curated by Samson Young and Yang Yeung at ArtisTree.
Talenia Phua Gajardo, Founder and CEO, The Artling
When I get to Art Basel… I’ll go to the Insights sector, which features a selection of cutting-edge and interesting artists from around Asia-Pacific. It’s always important for us at The Artling to keep a close watch on what is happening in the region.
Outside of the fair… Phillips, Christie’s and Sotheby’s usually have great exhibitions and previews on during the week and those are always worth visiting. Also, this year is particularly exciting because of the launch of art hub H Queen’s, where some mega international galleries have just opened.
A talk I can’t miss… I always enjoy the Intelligence Squared debates and am very much looking forward to this year’s edition. The art fairs also have a great line-up of talks that are open to all, as do the non-profit spaces. The Upper House has a great talks series called ‘Up Close With…’, which is always fun.
To survive art week… Pace yourself.
William Zhao, Editor-at-Large (Art & Design), Hong Kong Tatler
When I get to Art Basel in Hong Kong… I’ll head first to Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi. She always hosts really surprising shows. This year one of the artists she represents, Leila Hekmat, will also be performing at Duddell’s. That will be amazing.
Outside of the fair… I’ll go to a very small, private exhibition hosted at Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts. Tai Kwun’s curator, Tobias Berger, worked with Para Site for a long time and has also worked with M+. He knows the local and international art scenes very well, so I’m very curious to see what he’s putting together.
A talk I can’t miss… Rolls-Royce has asked me to hold a private talk in my house for 10 to 15 big collectors.
