In The Gym With Victor Chau, The King Of Yoga Selfies
Victor Chau is no stranger to Hong Kong's yoga community. Known for his spectacular yoga selfies (learn exactly how he takes his photos here) and hands-on approach to yoga teaching, Victor is often on the road, traveling all over Asia to teach others how to stretch, meditate and unwind.
In our latest edition of In The Gym With, we asked Victor about his yoga journey, cheat day treats and who he looks up to as fitspiration.
When did you first start working out?
I have been doing yoga for more than 15 years now, but I only seriously incorporated it as a workout to my routine about four years ago.
Describe a typical week of workouts for you.

What is your favourite workout, class or exercise?
Yoga is still my number one go-to discipline for my physical and spiritual wellbeing, but I do love the adrenaline rush that I get from spinning and cross-training. On my rest days, I like to go on a hike in Hong Kong.
How do you stay motivated?
Knowing that each yoga practice or workout will keep me fit, calm my nerves, centre myself and slow down my ageing process—all of which will make me a happier and more wholesome person. That is my motivation.
What do you wear when working out? Any fave brands or stores?
Lululemon—it offers a wide variety of options from yoga, running, CrossFit and spinning. Even on days when I work out or practice yoga twice a day, my workout clothes do not smell because of their technology that inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria.
What does your cheat day look like?
French fries, burgers and mac and cheese.
What’s on your workout playlist?
For yoga, I will listen to something mellow. Recently there’s been a lot of songs by Calum Scott in my playlist but when I’m doing something active, I would turn to Chainsmokers and the late Avicii.

Favourite healthy foods and restaurants?
I eat at home a lot as I enjoy cooking, but if I do go out, I love everything at Grassroots Pantry on Hollywood Road.
How do you stay fit while travelling?
I take my yoga mat with me wherever I travel so I can make sure that I can at least do some self-practice in my hotel room. I like to try out yoga classes at the local yoga studios too. If there are none around, I'd go for a 30-minute run and a 30-min stretch and handstand practice.
Advice on starting a fitness regime?
Consistency is key—and start with a realistic plan. For example, if you do not already have a habit of working out, you can start with every other day for 30-40 minutes. Slowly work up to a daily 60-minute workout or practice.
It also requires a mind shift where you put your health as top priority, and once you have that mindset, everything you do will revolve around bettering your health and well being.
A sport you’ve never tried but want to?
I would really love to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Morning or evening workouts?
Both work for me just fine, but if I really have to choose, then I'd go with morning workouts (because then I can have a social life at night).
Who is your Fitspiration or sporting hero?
Briohny & Dice for their handstands and grace, and my teacher and mentor Claire Norgate. She's taught me so much about the human anatomy and her never-stop-learning attitude really inspires me.
