Asia's First Marriott Marquis Hotel Is Not Where You'd Expect

The Marriott Marquis brand comes with certain requirements—and the Bangkok Marriott Marquis satisfies them all

When it comes to hotels, we've all heard of the Marriott, but the Marriott Marquis is likely to be a new name to many.

With just eight of them in the world—six in the US and one in Qatar—the Marriott's larger-than-life hotel brand has recently arrived in Asia, right in the middle of Bangkok.

So what makes a Marriott hotel a Marriott Marquis? It must have:

a prime location in the centre of a gateway city
more than 1,000 rooms
over four different restaurants/dining experiences in-house
an iconic building with city landmark status
extensive meeting facilities and spaces
a unique and differentiating 'wow' feature
additional large-scale amenities such as a fitness centre and concierge lounge

The five-star Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park (the former Imperial Queen's Park Hotel) satisfies all of these requirements, making it the city’s largest hotel.

Location

Located right next to Phrom Phong BTS station along Sukhumvit road, the Bangkok Marriott Marquis is an easy 30-40 minute drive from either Suvarnabhumi Airport or Don Mueang Airport.

The hotel also offers direct access to Queen’s Park, a popular spot for joggers, romantics on park benches and locals playing Sepak Takraw (the impressive Thai sport of ‘kick volleyball’).

Walking through the park takes you right into the EM district (EmQuartier and Emporium at Phrom Phong station) within five minutes, and from there, you’re a few BTS stops away from the shopping mecca that is Siam, or the nightlife district of Thonglor.

Inside the hotel

With 1,360 rooms and suites split between two towers, and a sprawling lobby that accommodates large groups, the hotel is huge by Bangkok standards with both business and leisure appeal.

Rooms range from 32 square metre deluxe rooms to the 750 square metre Sky Suite, and all are bathed in plenty of natural light through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor is minimal and clean—ideal for business travellers—and fitted with plush beds, modern workstations and international outlets.

The 24-hour M Lounge offers amazing views over Queen’s Park and the city, where M Club room guests can enjoy complimentary meals throughout the day in addition to free WiFi, printing and other business services.

Spa and fitness

Fitness buffs will love the giant fitness centre that’s open 24 hours—there’s even a squash court you can book with racquets provided. On the same floor, the outdoor swimming pool between the hotel’s two towers offers plenty of daybeds to get your swim and tan on.

In need of some pampering? The hotel’s in-house Quan Spa offers a full menu of traditional Thai and and modern treatments, including massages, therapy baths, body scrubs and facials.

Dining

For a hotel this big, the Bangkok Marriott Marquis has four restaurants—Goji Kitchen + Bar, Siam Tea Room, Soba Factory and Pagoda—that serve up a diverse range of international buffet, authentic Thai, Japanese and Chinese cuisine, respectively.

We especially loved the beautifully designed Siam Tea Room, from its candy jar and pastry-filled entrance to its authentic “Grandma recipes” that are only passed down to the chef through his family.

Meetings and event facilities

With its huge size, the Bangkok Marriott Marquis is perfect for conferences, business meetings and large-scale social events including weddings. We’re talking three separate ballrooms, 30 meeting rooms and over 5,000 square metres of event space—so don’t be surprised if you’re invited to an event here anytime soon.
