1. Jockey Club Innovation Tower

This futuristic Avant grande structure was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Zaha Hadid. Marking her first and only work in Hong Kong, the Jockey Club Innovation Tower displays Hadid’s postmodern style in its full glory. Such a bold architectural design is only fitting as the home to the creative talents of Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Design.

Depending on which angle you're looking from, the tower can take on various looks––an enormous aquatic vessel or an ultra-slim architectural model. More than highlighting Hadid’s excellence in her craft, the building also adds a dramatic flavour to Kowloon's banal landscape.

2. 1881 Heritage

A fusion of modernity and history is embodied at 1881 Heritage. Formerly the first headquarters of Hong Kong’s marine police, this shopping complex also houses a boutique hotel (House 1881), and combines contemporary branded items with historical exteriors––representative of the historical yet modern vibe of the city itself.

With its neoclassical style exterior that is located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, the site stands out and remains both a picturesque and popular choice for photoshoots. Adding a snap of this place to your feed will certainly capture the colourful mix of past and present of Hong Kong.

3. Hong Kong Design Institute

With its striking glass-planed podium supported by intricately patterned towers, it’s no surprise that the Hong Kong Design Institute is also nurturing the city’s future design talents. The school was built using concrete, glass, and steel; its jarring design influenced by Hungarian-French urban planner Yona Friedman, the mind behind the ‘spatial city’ concept.

Looking like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie, French architects Coldéfy & Associés crafted something eccentric and one that visually represents creativity. While it may be challenging to capture the entire colossal structure, parts of the interior like the aerial platform which seems to "float" above the towers, are also worth a place in your camera.

4. Bank of China Tower

Hong Kong’s trademark skyline wouldn’t be what it is without the Bank of China Tower. Its design is helmed by Pritzker Prize recipient, I.M. Pei, and his modernist and signature geometric pattern is flaunted in the tower’s iconic symmetrical design and triangular glass walls. Situated right at the centre of the Hong Kong's business and financial district, the inspiration behind the building's design is based on the delicate stature of bamboo, with each section of the trunk reaching higher and higher.

The design is lauded due to its amicable balance of modern architecture and traditional Chinese design. When the weather is clear, the prism-shaped glass panels reflect the sun's rays creating an ever-glistening glow.

5. Tai Kwun

Located at the former Central Police Station compound, Tai Kwun Centre is a leading place for arts and culture in the city. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron recreated a historical site into a public space that celebrates history, art, and culture. The meticulous eight-year restoration process showcases the groundbreaking result of blending old and new––embracing the city’s own mixture of modernity and tradition.

The space is home to 16 revitalised historical buildings, including the Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison, which are juxtaposed against the contemporary designed JC Contemporary and JC Cube. At Tai Kwun, you can not only appreciate the array of music and theatre performances, and art and culture exhibitions, but also the little architectural details of the site.
