5 Reasons Amandari Is Ubud’s Most Authentic Luxury Hideaway

Hotel trends may come and go, but there’s something about Amandari that boasts an authenticity and humble luxury that’s not only distinctly Aman, but that makes staying there a truly timeless experience.

The name, Amandari, means "peaceful spirits"—which is apt, as it's the perfect place to gently immerse yourself in Bali's calm and spiritually rich culture.

A modern "Karang"

If you’ve been to Bali, you’re probably familiar with the "Karang"—a traditional Balinese family compound that includes a family temple and multiple homes to house extended family. Amandari has expanded on this concept.

As well as having its own temple in a peaceful glade, the hotel features a collection of luxurious private suites and villas, each housed in the same Balinese stone structures seen in Karangs all over the island.

Room to breathe

Amandari's thatch-roofed villas are stunning. Interiors are a tasteful blend of local touches—from coconut and teak wood accents to artistic details by local artisans—with all of the appropriate modern comforts.

Single-storey or duplex villas are cleverly positioned to open up to views of the valley and rice terraces, with a select few featuring private emerald-green pools that melt into the lush surroundings.

Part of their world

Adding to its authenticity, locals continue to use the grounds at Amandari; rice, bananas, coconuts and papayas are harvested from the soaring trees that surround the hotel grounds, local children take traditional dance Balinese lessons in property’s pagodas and a whisper of Gamelan music can be heard from surrounding temples.

Amandari's location is also worth noting, as it sits in a quiet part of Ubud that feels far enough from the area's touristic hub, but still close enough to explore if you'd like to. Nearby are restaurants and bars favoured by locals and expats alike—we recommend The Sayan House for its Japanese-Latin cuisine and stellar views.

Jungle magic

Amandari makes the most of its position at the heart of the Ayung Valley, a canyon of cascading jungle, and they encourage its guests to do the same. From breathtaking bike rides through the surrounding rice fields to a private candlelit dinner in the hotel's perfectly positioned bale.

More of a morning person? Amandari's Ayung Valley Hike offers guests a gentle trek with a personal guide through the rice terraces, orchards and forests of the Ayung River Gorge, with a breakfast picnic set up to look forward to at the end of your stroll.

Island indulgence

Of course, it's not a tropical getaway without treating yourself to a bit of wellness indulgence. Aman Spa offers all of the favourites, but if you really want to go all out, try the Village Spa Journey. It includes a combination of the Balinese Melukat purification ceremony and holy water rituals with a full-body exfoliation, a body wrap of mineral-rich volcanic clay and a therapeutic head massage.

Private yoga and meditation sessions in the gardens can be arranged, as well as personal training sessions in the fitness centre.
